Task 1 – Definitions & Conventions

"Using some of the links on blackboard write 250 of your own words introducing what a thriller genre is.Think about the generic conventions, character types, story lines and sub genre."

Thriller is a genre of film and books. The genre is famous for being able to meld with many and almost all other genres to mention a few, Action thriller, Conspiracy thriller, Crime thriller, Drama thriller, Erotic thriller, Medical thriller and Supernatural thriller etc…

The most the common elements incorporated into a thriller are frequent action, resourceful heroes, cliffhangers and suspense. Thrillers often are set in exotic locations such as Polar Regions, high seas, deserts or foreign cities. The conventional thriller “hero” is a man accustomed to danger such as soldiers, seamen and spies etc. Even though traditionally these heroes are men, women have been increasingly common.

Thrillers are never told in a straight line, there are always overlapping mysteries that send the hero in a spiral trying to twart the enemys plan rather than focus on solving the crime that happened. Jeopardy and violent situations are common plot elements. Thrillers also occur on a much larger in scale, the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, and even the overthrow of a government. Thrillers are also heavily influenced by film noir.
